The Initial Consultation

This sounds a little daunting but usually turns out to be a walk round your garden, a discussion of several ideas and lots of questions from both parties.

Before the meeting it's useful if you can get everyone in the household to write down their wishlist of what they would like the garden to be, ignoring any constraints that currently exist.  As well as the 'likes' its also worth making a list of things that you do not want.  These lists don't have to just list the usual things like 'dining area' - they can include emotions, atmospheres, ambitions, pictures... you name it!

It's also worth spending some time thinking how much time you will spend in the garden, both 'visiting' and 'gardening'.  The 'visiting' times are important because if, for example, you will mainly be in the garden in the evenings then garden lighting and night-scented plants may be key design features.  The 'gardening' time will obviously affect the design - neither the client nor designer want a garden that cannot be kept as intended.

The initial consultation usually lasts up to 60 minutes, and Pure Garden Design does not charge for consultations within 15 miles of the design office.  After the initial consultation the next step is the development of the sketch plan.
