Garden for Architectural House

The clients are retired architects who designed and built the house themselves. The original garden had been constructed at the same time as the house, but the timber structures had become unsafe and had to be removed. The brief was therefore to create a garden that linked the house to its environment.

PURE garden design's proposal reflected the strong geometry of the house, balanced by soft planting concentrating on foliage texture rather than colour. Two terraces were included to allow the clients a choice between sun and shade at any time of day, and the second of these was embraced by an arbour with the same proportions as the mullions of the house windows.

The scheme used Cornish slate and a specially selected brick to tie in with the house, contrasting these materials through the design.

Project Name: Contemporary woodland garden
Location: Camberley, Surrey
Size: 600 square metres (0.15 acre)
Overall project budget £30,000
Duration: 5 months
Completion: Autumn 2005

Nature of project:

Stunning house set in a mixed deciduous and coniferous woodland. The scheme had to respond to both the house and the environment, inheriting its strong geometric lines from the architecture of the house and its soft planting from the surrounding environment.

"After being disappointed by other designers it was refreshing to see Pure Garden Design's proposals - the garden and house complement each other perfectly."
